Programs and Operations

The Office of Programs and Operations serves as a direct liaison between the member institutions and the Foundation's funding sources to ensure the success of all projects and activities. The office is responsible for the operational compliance of federally funded Cooperative Agreements. Programs under the Cooperative Agreements address: student and professional development; science and medical research; and community outreach initiatives. Faculty and students may contact the Office of Programs and Operations to receive fellowships and internship information and applications. Faculty at member institutions may submit Letters of Intent (LOIs) to secure funding for new projects. Contact Dr. Annette Ellis ([email protected]) for the LOI format and deadlines.

Community Service and Outreach Division

The mission of the Division of Community Service and Outreach (CSO) is to provide support for professional education, research and community service in the promotion of optimum environmental health among poor and minority populations.

The primary project of the CSO Division is the Mississippi Delta Project Phase II.  Phase I produced needs assessments in the following four critical areas called profiles.

    • Environmental Health
    • Health Providers
    • Educational Resources
    • Sociodemographic and Health.

Phase II will implement the recommendations and ideas identified from Phase I. CSO will facilitate the initiation and development of demonstration projects that will address the environmental health issues identified for the region.

    Division of Science & Research

The Division of Science & Research is responsible for developing and promoting the Foundation's scientific and programmatic agenda as it relates to diseases and disorders that disproportionately impact minority populations. The Division will also provide technical assistance to program and institutional staff. Another major duty of DSR is to direct interdisciplinary, biomedical, and other research consortia sponsored by the Foundation.

Environmental Health and Toxicology Research Program

The Environmental Health and Toxicology Research Program (EHTRP) is a component of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's (ATSDR) substance-specific applied research program (SSARP),  which seeks to determine relationships between human health effects and exposure to hazardous substances. In 1992, ATSDR identified approximately
119 substance-specific priority data needs for 38 hazardous substances found  at National Priorities List (NPL or "Superfund") sites. EHTRP research will contribute significantly to the knowledge base on the human health effects of these substances and their threshold exposure levels.  For further information please contact Marcia Owens at 404-634-1993.

The Conferences and Travel Department serves as a central office for all preliminary, on-site, and post meeting conference and travel activities scheduled on behalf of the Minority Health Professions Foundation. This department dictates the standards by which all Foundation events should be conducted while also ensuring consistency across all projects.
