Principal Investigator: Dr. Guangdi Wang
Title Of Project: Quantitative Determination of PCB’s, PAH’s, and Heavy Metals in the Urban Environment of New Orleans
Focus:

The research focus of this project is the quantitative determination of PCBs, PAHs, and heavy metals in the urban environment of New Orleans by analyzing a variety of urban environmental samples including soils, sediments, and surface drinking water. Specifically the concentrations of 9 EPA listed PCB congeners (including PCB congeners #5, 29, 154, and 209), 16 PAHs (including benzo(a) pyrene, benzo (b)fluoranthene, bibenz (ah) anthracene), 9 metals (including, lead, zinc, cadmium, and copper) will be determined in samples collected from all areas of the city.
This research will provide first hand data regarding environmental pollutants that have been well known as carcinogenic (PAHs and PCBs). These data can be used for statistical evaluation of the effects of these pollutants on cancer occurrence among inner city residents that are mostly minorities.
