The latest research in the medical field shows that Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death in the United States of America. These studies show that the risk is much more hire for the African-American population.
These statistics might be alarming but African-Americans have no need to worry. They can easily avoid this disease by understanding its risks and taking the necessary steps to address them. The risk of one getting a stroke or heart disease is increased by several conditions. The most common conditions include obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Believe it or not, African-Americans have the highest prevalence of high blood pressure not only in the States but in the entire world. High blood pressure, which is also referred to as hypertension, greatly increases the risk of acquiring high blood pressure and stroke. Worse still, hypertension can cause a lot of damage to your heart even before any symptoms can be noticed, which is why it is also known as the “silent killer”. High blood pressure is not only more prevalent in blacks than in whites, but it also tends to develop in blacks much earlier in life.
The percentage of African-Americans affected by obesity is disproportionate. A study conducted among non-Hispanic blacks who are age 20 and older showed that 77 percent women and 63 percent men are obese or overweight. A good way of controlling your weight is focusing on the quality of the food you eat throughout the day not only during meals.
A comparison between non-Hispanic whites and African-Americans shows that African-Americans are more likely to suffer from diabetes. Diabetes can be prevented and it is curable. However, most people fail to recognize the early signs and symptoms or avoid seeking treatment for diabetes out of fear of any complications that may arise. One sure way of tackling diabetes and the other heart disease risks is regular exercise. The exercise burns the extra calories and also strengthens the cardiovascular system.
