StarLab Middle and High School Preparation for Careers in Public Health Prevention

Atlanta, GA (June 9 – July 18 2008)

StarLab is currently talking applications for this year’s program. StarLab Summer Science Program is a science program designed to introduce middle school and high school students to the many careers offered in public health and biomedical sciences. This six-week program is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools (AMHPS), in collaboration with the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBBChE). Annually, the program brings together 40-50 students from the metro-Atlanta area. Students are introduced to basic science methodology including laboratory demonstrations and hands on laboratory experiments. Topics introduced include chemistry, biology, medical technology and engineering. Through this program AMHPS, CDC and NOBBChE seek to cultivate a new generation of scientists and scholars who will address the complex nature of public health disparities among minority communities. The application deadline for new students is April 14, 2008. Invitations to returning students have already been mailed and must be returned by April 10, 2008. Students must currently be in grades 6-9th and live in metro Atlanta in order to be eligible. The program dates are June 9, 2008 – July 18, 2008, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and will be held at Clarke Atlanta University.

Public Health Summer Fellows

Atlanta GA (June 5– August 1, 2008)

The Public Health Summer Fellowship Program is a collaboration among Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, Morehouse School of Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools, Inc.. The program is designed to introduce and expose minority students to the exciting field of public health. The Public Health Summer Fellows program is an academically rigorous and intensive eight (8) week summer program. Students will experience firsthand the excitement, relevance and promise of careers in Public Health. The program commences with a one-week course to provide students with a foundation in the principles of epidemiology. The program then combines this academic knowledge with direct hands-on field experience. Using the combined resources of program sponsors and collaborators, students are placed into community based public health internships. During this six-week internship, participants work with professional mentors who are at the forefront of researching the nation’s priority public health issues. Students will participate in weekly seminars and learn how to analyze important health policy, programming and research issues. During the final week of the program Fellows participate in a symposium and provide oral presentations on their internship experiences.
