INTERNSHIP & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Minority Health Professions Foundation's Professional Development
Programs offer students an opportunity to enhance their academic,
professional and career development. These programs unite well-qualified
minority students and/or professionals from diverse health-related
fields with a number of federal agencies, pharmaceutical companies
and private organizations in exciting short- or long-term professional
development experiences in health sciences occupations.
Selected scholars will work on meaningful, cutting-edge projects
that will ensure better health interventions, preventions and treatments
of disease and disability for all Americans, including projects
that will have greater impact on the care of minorities and the
underserved. Participants will have the opportunity to participate
on teams conducting research and training to prevent disease and
disability.

Development Programs |
• Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Disease
Fellowship Program:
Provides educational and experiential opportunities for racial and
ethnic minority medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary and public
health graduate students in a broad array of public health activities.
This program is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC)/ National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID). Ferguson
Fellows are engaged for eight weeks in a rigorous program of public
health research and/or intervention at NCID. A summary is presented
at the end of the program. Their travel and housing expenses are
paid, and they receive a stipend for the summer. In order to be
eligible for this program, you must attend a MHPF member
institution or be a minority student pursing a Master of Public
Health or Doctorate of Public Health degree.
• Janssen Research Foundation Diversity Internship
Program:
Introduces pharmacy students from diverse backgrounds to the employment
opportunities available at Janssen Pharmaceutica. Student will participate
in hands-on research activities for 12 weeks. Eligible students
must be 3rd year PharmD candidates at a MHPF member institution.

The National
Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) Internship Program
This program is designed to
expose minority medical students to the various facets of clinical
research within the CC.
The
Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center provides
hospital and clinic services to patients participating in research
studies at the NIH. The Clinical Center, which includes a 250-bed
hospital, supports the intramural clinical research program of the
NIH. The Clinical Center is specifically designed to place
patient-care facilities close to research laboratories to promote
the quick transfer of new findings by basic and clinical scientists
to the treatment of patients. In order to be eligible for this
program,
you
must be a medical or pharmacy student attending a MHPF member
institution.

• Pfizer Global Research and Development Minority
Internship Program:
Educates minority students about the employment opportunities available
in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Students participating in this program
will receive one-on- one professional and personal mentoring and
gain professional exposure to all areas of pharmaceutical research
and development. Students must be able to commit to a 12- week program.
Eligible students must attend a MHPF member institution. This program
is sponsored by Pfizer Global Research and Development.
• Public Health Summer Fellowship Program:
Offers an eight-week summer program to current juniors, seniors
and recent college graduates. The purpose of the program is to expose
under-represented minority students to the excitement, relevance
and promise of public health careers in order to influence their
professional goals and career choices. Housing, meals and travel
costs will be provided by the program. The collaborating institutions
are: Morehouse School of Medicine, the Rollins School of Public
Health at Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), which contributes mentoring, field experiences
and academic training to participants.For more information and an

• Star Lab Program:
The Star Lab
program is no longer accepting applications.
• U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Program:
Provides work-study opportunities within the FDA that allow participants
to learn about overseeing the safe production of foods, the manufacture
of safe and effective drugs and the manufacture of safe and effective
medical devices. FDA Fellows are introduced to the various facets
of research within the FDA over seven weeks. A research findings
presentation at the end of the program is required. Fellows' travel
and housing expenses are paid, and they receive a stipend for the
summer. Eligible students must attend a MHPF member institution.

Before you fill out anything, take time to read and review the Step-by-Step
Instructions and pay attention to the established deadlines of specific
programs. Good luck.
• Please apply by the program's deadlines.
• Type or print all answers in each section.
• You may apply to more than one program using the same application
and references. In order to apply for more than one
program, separate Statements of Interest must be submitted. The
heading at the top of your statement should include your
name, institution and program of
interest.
• It may take up to three (3) weeks to verify that the application
has been received by the MHPF.
A postcard will be sent to let you know our office has received
it and if anything is missing. We
will retain your application for one year from the date it
is received.
• This is a vital part of your application, so think carefully
about whom you would like to give you
a reference.
• Have the person who completes your reference form place
it in an envelope and sign it across the flap. From
