Scholarship Opportunities
AMHPS currently offers two scholarship awards through the Annual Symposium. Both scholarships provide an opportunity for students to showcase their commitment to the biomedical sciences and the health professions. Employees and family members of employees of the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools (AMHPS) are excluded from participating.
Robert N. Black, Sr. Scholarship Award
Dr. Keith L. Black, an internationally renowned neurosurgeon and scientist, established a $1,000 scholarship in honor of his father, Mr. Robert N. Black, Sr., a retired teacher and administrator. Robert N. Black, Sr. has had a distinguished educational career that spanned thirty-seven years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University, a master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Pennsylvania and his ED.S. from Kent State University.
SELECTION CRITERIA - All students attending the Symposium are eligible to participate. The scholarship will be given to the student who demonstrates commitment to their studies, enthusiasm and social and cultural awareness. The criteria for entry are as follows:

Students must have a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Students must write a one-page essay (300 words) about their interest in science. *

Two letters of recommendation from a counselor/student affairs representative
and teacher/professor nominating student(s) for the award. Recommendations must include students’ grade point average, community involvement (volunteer experience), science interest, and leadership skills (participation in associations/organizations).

The nominee must be a student attending the Annual Symposium.
Carol B. Lewis Scholarship Award
The Carol B. Lewis Scholarship Award was established in 2001 in honor of the late Carol B. Lewis. Carol Lewis was the former Executive Director of the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools (AMHPS). During her tenure, she was committed to increasing the representation of minorities in the health professions and biomedical sciences. This scholarship honors her contributions to the Annual Symposium.
SELECTION CRITERIA - The scholarship will be given to the student who demonstrates commitment to their studies, enthusiasm and social and cultural awareness. The criteria for entry are as follows:

Students must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an AMHPS member institution and attending the Annual Symposium.

Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Students must major in a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) discipline.

Students must write a one-page essay about their interest in science. *

Two letters of recommendation from a STEM instructor. Recommendations must include students’ grade point average, community involvement (volunteer experience), science interest, and leadership skills (participation in associations/organizations).

Students applying for this scholarship must have their abstract selected for participation in the Annual Symposium poster competition.
